Custom Itinerary on a Komodo Liveaboard: What Can and Cannot Be Changed

On a private Komodo charter you can change the order of stops, meal and wake-up times, the pace, which dragon island you visit and how many nights you sail. You cannot change ranger-led trekking rules, park fees, the tidal window at Manta Point, the distance between anchorages, or the captain’s safety authority.

Start from what is genuinely fixed

Every operator says “fully customisable”. Almost none says what that excludes. The useful version of this conversation starts at the other end — with the constraints — because once you know those, everything else really is yours to arrange.

Komodo liveaboard customisation — what moves and what does not
ElementChangeable?Why
Order of stops within a dayYesThe crew already reorders for current and wind
Wake-up, meal and activity timesYesGalley and crew schedule flexes around you
Number of nightsYes, subject to the boat’s calendarCharged at the per-night charter rate from IDR 85,000,000
Komodo Island or Rinca for the dragon trekUsuallyBoth are inside the park; ranger availability decides
Adding Rangko Cave, Seraya, Sabolo or BidadariYes, on routes of 4 nights and upThey sit outside the core park loop and need the extra day
Diving instead of snorkellingYes, with a supplementRequires certified guides, tanks and a compatible schedule
Ranger-led trekking on Komodo and RincaNoNational park rule, not an operator upsell
Park entrance feesNoSet by PP No. 36/2024 and charged per person per visit
Manta Point timingNoGoverned by tide and current, not by preference
Reaching south Komodo in under 5 nightsNoDistance and swell exposure make it unsafe to rush
Sailing at speeds above 10–12 knotsNoThe hull and the Mitsubishi 8DC11 define the cruise

Three real customisations and what they cost

1. Turning a 3D2N into a 4D3N to add a slow day. The most common request, and the most worthwhile. The extra night is charged at the per-night charter rate — from IDR 85,000,000 — and on reseller tiers the 3D2N to 4D3N step for the same guest count runs roughly IDR 10,000,000. What you get for it is Siaba, Sebayur, Rangko Cave and Seraya, plus one genuinely unhurried half-day at anchor.

2. Converting a snorkelling charter into a dive charter. This is not a small change. It needs certified dive guides, tanks and weights, compressor time and a schedule rebuilt around current windows rather than daylight. It is quoted as a supplement per trip, and it usually pushes the sensible duration up: Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock are advanced sites that reward a five-night programme far more than a three-night one.

3. Moving the Padar climb from sunrise to mid-morning. Free, and popular with families who dislike a 05:30 wake-up. The cost is not financial: the three-bay viewpoint faces the dawn, the steps have no shade, and by 09:00 the climb is hot. Most guests who ask for this on day one ask to reverse it by day two.

The weather clause, in plain language

Every published Komodo itinerary carries three lines: destinations may change depending on weather and field conditions for your safety and comfort; adjustments may occur in cases of force majeure; participants are required to follow the guide’s instructions throughout the trip. Those are not disclaimers to skim. In a park where Manta Point and Taka Makassar routinely swap position based on current, an operator who never deviates from the printed order is the one to worry about.

What you should ask instead is how substitutions are handled: whether a missed Manta Point becomes a second attempt the next morning, whether a cancelled southern leg converts to Batu Bolong or Tatawa, and who makes that call. On a charter, you should be in that conversation.

Rate and specification data on this page was read directly from the operator’s own Aura Suci charter listing on komodoluxury.com and checked on 1 August 2026. Rates move with season and fuel; always confirm the live figure with the reservations desk before you transfer a deposit.

Who benefits most from customising

  • Multi-generational families — different wake-up times, a slower morning, and a Family cabin that keeps four people together.
  • Certified dive groups — a schedule built around current windows instead of daylight.
  • Corporate charters — the karaoke lounge, dining salon and deck become the venue, and the itinerary bends around the agenda.
  • Photographers — negotiating anchorages for light rather than convenience is the single highest-value customisation nobody asks for.
  • Not worth it for solo travellers and couples on a budget; the open trip already delivers the highlights at a fraction of the charter cost.

Before you write a wishlist, check the FAQ hub and read what the extra night actually buys — most “custom” requests turn out to be a duration change in disguise. If your dates need a different hull, the liveaboard Labuan Bajo desk holds the wider fleet calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Can I design my own Komodo liveaboard itinerary?

On a private charter, largely yes — order of stops, meal times, activity pace, extra nights and which dragon island you visit are all negotiable. On an open trip, no; the route is fixed because other guests booked the same schedule.

What cannot be changed on any Komodo itinerary?

Ranger-led trekking on Komodo and Rinca, national park entry rules and fees, the tidal window at Manta Point, the physical distance between anchorages, and the captain’s authority to move the route for safety.

Can I skip Padar and sleep in?

Yes on a charter. The 06:00 start exists because of light and heat, not regulation. Climbing at 08:00 is legal and considerably hotter, and the three-bay view will be flatter in the light — but it is your charter.

Can I add extra nights mid-charter?

Only if the boat’s schedule is clear behind you. Extra nights are charged at the per-night charter rate, which starts from IDR 85,000,000, and cannot be added once the following group has been confirmed.

Can I request a specific dive site?

You can request it; whether you get it depends on certification and conditions. Castle Rock and Shotgun require Advanced Open Water plus roughly 30 logged dives and a reef hook. A guide will decline the site rather than take an unqualified diver.

Can the chef cook for allergies and dietary requirements?

Yes, with notice. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halal requirements are routine on Labuan Bajo liveaboards. Give the desk at least two weeks so provisioning happens in Labuan Bajo rather than improvised at sea.

Can we swap Komodo Island for Rinca?

Usually yes — both are inside the national park and both have ranger-led dragon trails. Rinca is closer to Labuan Bajo, which can free an hour elsewhere in the day. Ranger availability decides the final call.

Who has the final say on the route?

The captain, on safety grounds, every time. Published itineraries all carry the same clause: destinations may change according to weather and field conditions, and adjustments occur in cases of force majeure. That clause is real, not boilerplate.
