Is it cheaper to book a Komodo trip on site in Labuan Bajo?
This is one of the most common questions asked about Komodo, and the honest answer has a season attached to it. Labuan Bajo has a genuine walk-in market — agency shopfronts along Jalan Soekarno Hatta, harbourside desks, hostel noticeboards — and boats hate sailing with empty cabins. That creates real last-minute discounts. It also creates real risk, and the size of both changes month by month.

The arithmetic people forget
A 20% saving on a IDR 4,750,000 berth is IDR 950,000. Two extra nights in Labuan Bajo while you shop, at IDR 400,000 a night, is IDR 800,000 — plus meals, plus two days of a holiday you flew a long way for. The saving survives, but barely, and only if you find a berth on the first or second day of looking. If you fly in on a Thursday hoping for a Friday departure and nothing has space, the maths inverts immediately.
When walking in genuinely wins
- You are already in Flores with an open schedule and no return flight booked to a fixed date.
- You are travelling in the quiet months — the December to March monsoon window, when some boats are in maintenance and the ones sailing want to fill cabins.
- You are solo and flexible about cabin type. A single unsold berth in a shared cabin is exactly the inventory that gets discounted.
- You are happy with a day tour or a 2D1N rather than a specific boat on a specific date.
When walking in is a bad idea
- Peak season. July and August are the highest-price weeks of the year and the fleet runs full. So is the Christmas–New Year window.

The risk nobody prices in
The walk-in market in Labuan Bajo includes both operators and resellers, and the cheapest number in a shopfront window is often a reseller’s spread on a boat they do not own. That is not automatically a problem — resellers fill boats and always have — but it does change what happens when the weather turns. If a trip is cancelled for wind, you want to be holding written terms from the party who controls the vessel, not a handwritten receipt from an agent who has already banked the margin.

What does not change at the harbour
The national park fee. Under PP No. 36/2024 it is Rp 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit and Rp 50,000 on a weekday or Rp 75,000 on a weekend for Indonesian visitors, and no amount of negotiating changes a regulated tariff. If a walk-in quote looks dramatically cheaper than everything else, check first whether the park fee has simply been left out of it.
