Is It Safe to Sail Komodo? The Safety Questions Worth Asking

Komodo sailing is safe on a properly equipped boat with a competent crew, and the way to establish that is to ask for specifics rather than reassurance. Aura Suci carries liferafts, ring buoys, fire extinguishers and first-aid kits, and navigates with AIS, Garmin GPS, compass and radio. Other operators document the same things openly, and the safety standards Elbark publishes in full are a useful benchmark for what a straight answer should look like.

Is it safe to sail Komodo?

Boat incidents in Indonesian waters get international coverage, and travellers reasonably ask this question before booking. The honest answer is that the risk is real but it is not evenly distributed: it concentrates in overloaded vessels, missing safety equipment, boats without proper navigation and communication gear, and crews sailing into weather they should have waited out. Every one of those is something you can ask about before you hand over a deposit.

What follows is not reassurance. It is a checklist.

The hull and the load

Two numbers matter more than any brochure adjective. The first is size: Aura Suci is a 30-metre wooden phinisi with a 6-metre beam, a heavy displacement hull that moves slowly and predictably rather than slamming. The second is load: maximum 24 guests across eight cabins. Published listings elsewhere in the shared segment show comparable hulls carrying 32 to 35 guests. Overloading is the recurring factor in serious incidents across the region, and guest count is the easiest thing in the world to ask about.

Cruise speed is a safety specification too, not just a comfort one. A Mitsubishi 8DC11 running 10–12 knots covers the exposed Kalong-to-Padar leg in three to four hours and gives the crew the option to move away from weather rather than sit in it.

Weather judgement is the real variable

When conditions matter most
PeriodConditionsWhat good judgement looks like
April – June, September – NovemberCalmest of the yearRoutine sailing; little to manage
July – AugustStrong southeast trades in the open straitsReordering stops, waiting out morning wind, choosing sheltered anchorages
December – MarchNorthwest monsoon, roughest seas, part of the fleet in maintenanceWillingness to cancel or reschedule — and a written policy that lets them

The single best predictor of a safe trip is an operator with a written weather policy who is financially able to use it. An operator whose cancellation policy punishes them for not sailing has an incentive problem. Ask what happens to your money if the boat does not sail, and get the answer in writing.

The questions worth asking before you pay

  1. What vessel exactly am I booked on, by name? Agencies in Labuan Bajo resell berths on boats they do not operate.
  2. What is the maximum guest count on my departure?
  3. What safety equipment is on board? Liferafts, ring buoys, fire extinguishers, first-aid kits — by name, not “full safety equipment”.
  4. What navigation and communication equipment is fitted? AIS, GPS, compass, radio.
  5. May I see the vessel’s seaworthiness documentation? A legitimate operator can produce it.
  6. What is the written weather and reschedule policy?
  7. Is there a crew member trained in first aid on board?

Your own risk, honestly

Most incidents that affect guests on a well-run boat are not maritime at all. They are ankles on the Padar trail before dawn, sunburn, dehydration, coral cuts, and swimmers underestimating current at Manta Point — Karang Makassar is a drift site and the current is the reason mantas are there. Wear the life vest at drift sites even if you swim well, take a head torch for the 05:00 trailhead, and treat ranger instructions on Komodo and Rinca as instructions rather than suggestions. Dragons are wild animals and the ranger walks in front for a reason.

The summary

Komodo is not a dangerous place to sail. It is a place where the gap between a well-equipped boat and a badly equipped one is wide, and where the paperwork of asking takes ten minutes. Ask for the equipment list, the guest count, the vessel name and the weather policy in writing. Any operator worth booking will send all four without hesitating.

Frequently asked questions

What safety equipment should a Komodo liveaboard carry?

At minimum liferafts, ring buoys, fire extinguishers, first-aid kits and life vests, plus AIS, GPS, compass and radio for navigation and communication. Ask for the list by name — “full safety equipment” is not an answer.

How many guests is too many on a Komodo boat?

There is no single number, but overloading is a recurring factor in regional incidents, so guest count against hull size is worth checking. Aura Suci is capped at 24 guests on a 30-metre hull; published listings elsewhere show 32 to 35 on comparable boats.

Can I ask to see a boat’s seaworthiness papers?

Yes, and a legitimate operator can produce them. If a request for documentation is deflected, that is information in itself. Ask before paying a deposit rather than at the harbour on departure morning.

What happens if bad weather cancels the trip?

It depends entirely on the operator’s written policy, which is why you should read it before you pay. Aura Suci bookings are held with a 50% deposit that is non-refundable, with the balance due 30 days before departure — so the reschedule terms are the part that matters.

Is snorkelling at Manta Point safe?

It is a drift site at 8–18 metres with gentle to moderate current, and that current is exactly why the mantas are there. Wear the life vest, stay with the group and follow the guide’s entry and exit instructions even if you are a confident swimmer.

Is the Padar sunrise hike risky?

It is a real climb of roughly 20 to 30 minutes on steps and uneven ground, started in the dark. Most injuries on a Komodo trip happen here rather than at sea. Take a head torch, proper shoes and water, and do not rush the descent.

Check dates and hold a cabin

Aura Suci runs open-trip departures every Friday and whole-boat charters year round. Aura Suci is operated and sold through Komodo Luxury, the Labuan Bajo operator behind this boat since 2015. Bookings, cabin plans and the current rate sheet come from the reservations desk: WhatsApp +62 811 3823 875 or [email protected]. A booking is held with a 50% deposit (non-refundable) and the balance falls due 30 days before departure.

Every figure on this page was checked against the operator rate card and the official fee regulation on 1 August 2026. Rates move with season, fuel and exchange rate — ask for a written quote before you transfer anything.
