What Food Is Served on a Komodo Liveaboard?

Three cooked meals a day plus snacks, drinking water, tea and coffee are included in an Aura Suci open trip, prepared in the galley and served buffet-style on the main deck. Menus are set per departure rather than published. Vegetarian, halal and allergy requirements are handled at booking, not on the day.
What food is served on a Komodo liveaboard?
Food is one of the few genuinely all-inclusive parts of a Komodo liveaboard, and it is also one of the least documented. Almost no operator in Labuan Bajo publishes a menu, for a sensible reason: the boat provisions fresh in town before it sails and cooks what the market had that morning. What is fixed is the structure, not the dishes.
| Included in the fare | Not included |
|---|---|
| Breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the itinerary | Alcoholic drinks — no published bar list; treat as excluded |
| Afternoon snacks and fruit | Soft drinks unless the boat says otherwise |
| Drinking water throughout | Meals ashore before and after the trip |
| Tea and coffee all day | Special-request ingredients not agreed at booking |

How galley provisioning actually works
Everything you eat for three or four days comes aboard in Labuan Bajo before departure. There is no shop, no market and no resupply anywhere between Kelor and Kanawa, and the nearest anything is hours away by sea. That single constraint explains most of what people notice about liveaboard food.
It explains why the first day tends to be the most elaborate meal of the trip, why fresh salad appears early and cooked vegetables later, and — most importantly — why dietary requirements have to be agreed at booking rather than raised at the first dinner. A cook who learns about a shellfish allergy at the Kalong anchorage on night one has no way to fix the provisioning. A cook who knows a week ahead simply buys differently.
The shape of a day’s eating
| Time | Meal | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Before dawn on Padar day | Coffee, tea, light snack | The hike starts around 05:00; a full breakfast waits until you are back |
| After the morning activity | Breakfast, served on the main deck | Usually the biggest meal of the day on a hiking morning |
| Midday | Lunch, buffet style | Served at anchor between stops |
| Mid-afternoon | Snacks and fruit | After snorkelling, before the next leg |
| 19:00 – 20:00 | Dinner at anchor | The most relaxed part of the day |
The rhythm follows the itinerary rather than a clock — meal times move with conditions and stop order.
Dietary requirements: what to say and when
Say it at booking, in writing, and be specific. “No meat” and “strict vegetarian, no fish sauce” are different instructions in an Indonesian galley, where fish sauce and shrimp paste are ordinary seasonings rather than meat. The same is true of halal requirements, which are routine in Indonesia but still worth confirming for the specific boat and crew, and of allergies, which are a provisioning question rather than a preference.
| Requirement | What to write to the reservations desk |
|---|---|
| Vegetarian | Whether fish, eggs, dairy, fish sauce and shrimp paste are acceptable |
| Vegan | State it explicitly — it is less common and needs deliberate provisioning |
| Halal | Confirm for your departure in writing |
| Allergy | Name the allergen and the severity, and confirm it was recorded |
| Children | Ages, and whether simpler options are wanted |
| Medical diet | Describe it fully; a galley cannot improvise mid-itinerary |
What to bring yourself
- Any specialist food you cannot do without. Protein bars, gluten-free items, baby food, a specific brand of coffee — buy it in Labuan Bajo or bring it from home.
- A refillable bottle. Drinking water is available throughout and single-use plastic is the last thing a UNESCO World Heritage marine park needs.
- Snacks you actually like if you are a nervous eater. The gap between meals on a Padar morning is longer than it sounds.
- Rehydration salts. Three days of sun, salt water and hiking take more out of people than the food replaces.
Fresh water and drinks
Aura Suci carries 12,000 litres of fresh water, which is the specification behind two everyday comforts: showers after snorkelling stops are not rationed, and drinking water, tea and coffee are freely available all day rather than portioned. Alcohol is a separate matter — it is not listed as an inclusion and no bar price list is published, so plan on buying your own in Labuan Bajo and confirming the boat’s bring-your-own position in writing.
The realistic expectation
Indonesian cooking on a working boat: rice, noodles, grilled and fried fish, chicken, vegetable dishes, sambal, fruit, and Western-leaning breakfasts because most guests want them. It is generous, it is repetitive by day three, and it is far better than most people expect from a galley that provisioned once for the entire trip. Manage the one thing you control — tell them what you cannot eat, before they go shopping.
Frequently asked questions
Are all meals included on an Aura Suci trip?
Yes. Breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, plus afternoon snacks, drinking water, tea and coffee are inside the open-trip fare. Alcohol is not included and no bar price list is published, so treat it as excluded.
Can the boat cater for vegetarians or vegans?
Yes, if you say so at booking rather than on board. Be specific — in an Indonesian galley, fish sauce and shrimp paste are ordinary seasonings, so “vegetarian” needs to state whether those are acceptable. Vegan requests need explicit provisioning.
Is the food halal?
Halal requirements are routine to accommodate in Indonesia, but confirm it in writing for your specific departure. Provisioning happens in Labuan Bajo before the boat sails and cannot be adjusted once you are among the islands.
What if I have a serious food allergy?
Declare it at booking with the allergen named and the severity stated, and ask for written confirmation that it was recorded. There is no resupply during the itinerary and the nearest hospital is hours away in Labuan Bajo, so this is a provisioning decision, not a preference.
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
Yes, and it is sensible for specialist items — gluten-free products, baby food, a particular brand of coffee. Buy them in Labuan Bajo before boarding. Ask the crew before using galley refrigeration, which is provisioning space for up to 24 guests first.
Is drinking water included or do I buy bottles?
Included and freely available. Bring a refillable bottle rather than buying single-use plastic — there is no waste collection anywhere in the park, so everything that comes aboard leaves on the same hull.
Check dates and hold a cabin
Aura Suci runs open-trip departures every Friday and whole-boat charters year round. Aura Suci is operated and sold through Komodo Luxury, the Labuan Bajo operator behind this boat since 2015. Bookings, cabin plans and the current rate sheet come from the reservations desk: WhatsApp +62 811 3823 875 or [email protected]. A booking is held with a 50% deposit (non-refundable) and the balance falls due 30 days before departure.
