Do Komodo Boats Have Private Bathrooms?

Some do, many do not. Budget and shared boats commonly run corridor bathrooms for 20–35 guests, while superior and luxury boats offer en-suite in some or all cabins. All eight cabins on Aura Suci have a private bathroom, private balcony, air conditioning and sea view, with a bathtub in Master 1 and 2.
Do Komodo boats have private bathrooms?
This is the single most useful question to ask before booking a Labuan Bajo boat, and it is the one most often answered vaguely. “En-suite available” can mean two of twelve cabins. “Modern bathroom facilities” can mean two shared bathrooms for thirty guests. Ask for the number of cabins and the number of bathrooms, and the picture becomes instantly clear.
| Boat tier | Typical arrangement | Guests sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Budget / backpacker | Shared corridor bathrooms, sometimes deck showers only | Commonly 20–35 guests across 2–4 bathrooms |
| Standard | Mix — some en-suite cabins, some sharing | Depends entirely on which cabin you are given |
| Superior | En-suite in most cabins | Usually just your cabin |
| Luxury phinisi | En-suite in every cabin, hot water, sometimes a bathtub | Your cabin only |
| Aura Suci | En-suite in all 8 cabins, plus private balcony, AC and sea view | Your cabin only; maximum 24 guests on board |
Tier patterns compiled from published Labuan Bajo fleet listings, 1 August 2026. Aura Suci figures are the operator specification.
Why it matters more than it sounds
On land, a shared bathroom is a minor inconvenience. On a boat it is a different thing, for four reasons that only become obvious once you are aboard.
- Timing. Day two starts before dawn for the Padar hike. Twenty-four people getting ready at 04:45 through two bathrooms is a queue in the dark.
- Salt. You come out of the water three or four times a day. A rinse two steps from your bed is the difference between comfort and permanent stickiness.
- Night. Crossing a moving deck at 02:00 to reach a corridor bathroom is where minor incidents happen.
- Fresh water. Shared systems get rationed. Aura Suci carries 12,000 litres, which is why showers are not rationed on a three-day run.

The detail worth underlining is that a private balcony in every cabin is unusual at 30 metres. Builders normally trade balconies for berths. It matters practically as well as aesthetically: it is somewhere to dry a wet rash guard, somewhere to get air and a horizon at 03:00 if you are feeling queasy, and somewhere to sit that is not the communal deck.
What to ask any operator
- How many cabins, and how many of them are en-suite? A ratio, not an adjective.
- What is the maximum guest count at full load? Published shared-boat listings run to 32–35 guests. Aura Suci is 24.
- Is there hot water? Not universal in the budget tier.
- How much fresh water does the boat carry? The number that decides whether showers get rationed.
- Is the cabin I am quoted the cabin I get? Get the cabin name in writing, not just the tier.
Which cabin should you actually book?
| You are | Book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A couple | Master 1 or Master 2 | Two-guest cabins and the only two with a private bathtub — they sell first |
| Three friends | Master 3, Master 4, Deluxe 1 or Deluxe 2 | Three-guest cabins with the same en-suite, balcony and AC |
| A family of four | Family 1 or Family 2 | Built for four, and the cheapest per-person route for a family |
| Prone to seasickness | Any mid-ship cabin — ask the desk | Position matters more than tier; all eight are en-suite anyway |
| Booking late in peak season | Whatever is left | In July, August and the New Year window availability decides, not preference |
The short version
Do not assume. “Private bathroom” is the single specification that separates the tiers of the Labuan Bajo fleet, and it is not implied by price alone — plenty of boats charging IDR 4–5 million per berth still run shared facilities for thirty guests. Ask for cabins and bathrooms as two numbers, get your cabin name in writing, and the rest of the trip takes care of itself.
Frequently asked questions
Does every cabin on Aura Suci have a private bathroom?
Yes — all eight. Every cabin also has a private balcony, air conditioning and a sea view, which is unusual on a 30-metre hull. Master Cabin 1 and Master Cabin 2 additionally have a private bathtub.
Is there hot water on a Komodo liveaboard?
On superior and luxury boats, generally yes. In the budget tier it is not universal and should be asked about specifically. Aura Suci’s cabins have private bathrooms with water heaters, and the boat carries 12,000 litres of fresh water.
How many people share a bathroom on a budget Komodo boat?
Published listings in the shared segment show boats carrying 32 to 35 guests, typically with only a handful of shared bathrooms. That is the arrangement that produces the pre-dawn queue before the Padar hike.
Will fresh water run out on a three-day trip?
Not on a boat that carries enough of it. Aura Suci holds 12,000 litres, which is why showers after snorkelling stops are not rationed. On smaller tanks, crews do ration — ask for the tank capacity, not a reassurance.
Can I request a specific cabin?
Yes, and you should — by name rather than by tier. Master 1 and Master 2 are the two-guest cabins with bathtubs and they are the first to sell on any departure, in any season.
