Which Komodo Liveaboard Should I Pick If I Get Seasick Easily?

Pick the largest hull with the widest beam you can afford, a cruise speed of at least 10 knots, and a mid-ship cabin low in the boat. Then travel between April and June or September and November, when the straits are calmest. Aura Suci is 30 m with a 6 m beam and a 10–12 knot cruise — the specification that matters here.
Which Komodo liveaboard should I pick if I get seasick easily?
Seasickness is not random and it is not character. It is a physics problem with four inputs you can actually control before you book: how big the boat is, where you sleep in it, when you travel, and which legs of the route you are awake for. Get all four right and most people who describe themselves as “terrible on boats” have an uneventful trip.
1. Hull size and beam — the numbers to ask for
Motion is a function of length and width. A longer hull spans more of a wave rather than following it, and a wider beam resists roll. These are the two specifications to ask for before anything about décor.
| Specification | Aura Suci | Why it matters if you get seasick |
|---|---|---|
| Length overall | 30 m | Long enough to span short chop rather than pitch through it |
| Beam | 6 m | Width is the main resistance to roll — the sensation most people react to |
| Hull | Wooden traditional phinisi | Heavy displacement hull; slower, steadier motion than a light planing boat |
| Engine and cruise | Mitsubishi 8DC11, 10–12 knots | Covers the one overnight leg in 3–4 hours instead of dragging it out |
| Guest capacity | 24 across 8 cabins | Fewer people means faster tender turnarounds and less waiting in swell |

The comparison worth making is against the shared segment of the market, where published listings show boats carrying 32 to 35 guests. More guests on a similar hull means more time floating at a stop waiting for the tender, which is when people who feel queasy actually feel it.
2. Cabin position — the free upgrade
Motion is least at the centre of the boat, low down. It is worst at the bow and in the highest cabins. If you are prone to seasickness, ask for a mid-ship cabin and say why — reservations desks handle this request constantly and it costs nothing.
All eight cabins on Aura Suci have a private bathroom, a private balcony, air conditioning and a sea view, so choosing for position rather than tier does not cost you comfort. Two things help more than people expect: a private bathroom two steps from the bed, and a balcony where you can get fresh air and a horizon without going up to the deck at 03:00.
3. Season — the biggest single lever
| Period | Sea state | Verdict if you get seasick |
|---|---|---|
| April – June | Calmest of the year | Best window — book here |
| September – November | Calm | Equally good |
| July – August | Windy in the open straits and around Padar | Manageable on a big hull; avoid small boats |
| December – March | Roughest; northwest monsoon | Avoid if seasickness is a real concern |
The difference between a May crossing and a February one is far larger than the difference between any two boats. If you know you are sensitive, the season decision outranks the boat decision.
4. Know which legs actually move
Most of a Komodo itinerary is short hops in sheltered water — 20 minutes to 90 minutes, island to island, with nights at anchor. There is one long leg and it is the run from the Kalong anchorage to Padar, roughly three to four hours, done overnight. That is the leg to prepare for, and the good news is that you are asleep for it.
| Leg | Approximate time | Exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Labuan Bajo → Kelor | about 1 hour | Sheltered |
| Kelor → Manjarite → Kalong | about 1.5–2 hours total | Sheltered |
| Kalong → Padar (overnight) | about 3–4 hours | The most open leg — done asleep |
| Padar → Pink Beach → Komodo | about 1.5–2.5 hours total | Moderate |
| Komodo → Manta Point → Taka Makassar | about 1–1.5 hours total | Moderate, current-swept |
| Taka Makassar → Siaba → Kanawa | about 2–3 hours total | Sheltered |
Labuan Bajo to Kelor is verified; the rest are operational estimates written as ranges because no official distance table is published.
Practical measures that work
- Start medication before you board, not after you feel sick. Whatever you use, it works preventively and poorly as a rescue. Talk to a pharmacist before you travel.
- Stay on deck, look at the horizon. Below decks with a phone is the reliable way to bring it on.
- Eat lightly but eat. An empty stomach is worse than a light one.
- Stay hydrated. Twelve thousand litres of fresh water on board means drinking water is never rationed.
- Snorkel early. Being in the water is the fastest cure for mild queasiness that exists.
- Tell the crew on day one. They deal with it every departure and they will put you in the right place on deck without making a thing of it.
If you are genuinely severe
Then be honest with yourself about format rather than about boats. A one-day tour returns you to Labuan Bajo the same evening. A 2D1N gives you one night at anchor — and at anchor, in a sheltered bay, a 30-metre phinisi is close to motionless. Many people who cannot handle a small fast boat are entirely fine on a heavy displacement hull at anchor. The problem is usually transit, not the sea.
Frequently asked questions
Is a phinisi better than a speedboat for seasickness?
Generally yes. A heavy wooden displacement hull like a 30-metre phinisi moves slowly and predictably, while a light fast boat slams through chop. The trade is speed: the phinisi takes hours where a speedboat takes minutes, but those hours are far more comfortable.
Which cabin should I ask for if I get seasick?
Mid-ship and as low as the layout allows. Motion is greatest at the bow and on the highest deck. All eight Aura Suci cabins have a private bathroom, balcony, air conditioning and sea view, so choosing for position costs you nothing in comfort.
Which months are worst for rough seas in Komodo?
December to March, the northwest monsoon, is the roughest of the year. July and August bring strong southeast winds in the open straits. April to June and September to November are the calmest windows and the right choice if you are sensitive.
Is the overnight sailing leg rough?
It is the most open leg of the route — roughly three to four hours from the Kalong anchorage to Padar — but it is run overnight while guests sleep, and on a 30-metre hull at 10–12 knots most people never wake for it.
Should I take a day tour instead if I get seasick?
It is a reasonable option, because you are back on land the same evening. But a night at anchor in a sheltered bay is very calm, so a 2D1N is often more comfortable than a long day boat that runs out and back in one push.
Check dates and hold a cabin
Aura Suci runs open-trip departures every Friday and whole-boat charters year round. Aura Suci is operated and sold through Komodo Luxury, the Labuan Bajo operator behind this boat since 2015. Bookings, cabin plans and the current rate sheet come from the reservations desk: WhatsApp +62 811 3823 875 or [email protected]. A booking is held with a 50% deposit (non-refundable) and the balance falls due 30 days before departure.
